She Views Herself: Emerging Women Artists and the Self-Portrait

In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2012 a new art exhibition, entitled She Views Herself: Emerging Women Artists and the Self-Portrait, has been organized by renowned artist and curator Doris Kloster.
She Views Herself showcases self-portraiture by emerging women artists from around the world. The process of self-examination that is revealed in the artists’ paintings, sculptures, installations, videos and photographs exemplifies contemporary women’s negotiation of evolving global concepts of beauty, personal empowerment, positive self-image and the complex interplay of gender and political status.
The women artists in the exhibition include new talents from many countries including Azerbaïdjan, Bosnia, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Hungary, Iran, India, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, Morocco, Oman, Romania, Russia, Serbia, South Korea, Syria, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and the United States. Their unique world views influence their depictions of themselves. The self-portraits in this show can be seen as explorations of the iconic presence of women in visual interpretations of current world events. Whereas political images of women in art were once merely emblematic of high ideals, such as liberty or victory, females' growing prominence on the stage of global affairs now makes their personalities frequent vehicles for both probing commentary and manipulative propaganda.
Ultimately these artists’ self-portraits probe the dynamic relationships between contemporary women’s sense of self and their social and national identity. Viewers will be introduced to new, authentic avenues of introspection that transcend appearance, adapting arts symbols and surfaces to achieve personal revelation.
