When I went to Angkor Wat, Cambodia in 2003, I was overwhelmed by the magnificent beauty of the temple architecture and the sensuous sculptural depictions of gods and goddesses, divinities, mythical beings and demons which adorned every surface. I was fascinated by the rich mix of Hindu, Buddhist and animistic beliefs as it is reflected in the Khmer art of Angkor Wat.
I have photographed churches and religious iconography in Europe for many years and have been interested in the role of art in the spiritual life. I felt drawn to these stone carved beings of such profound beauty as they came to life before my camera.
